Former President Trump is in court in New York on Monday in a sweeping civil case that could jeopardize his control over some of his most famed properties.A judge last week determined Trump had been liable for fraud for inflating the value of some of his properties in order to secure business loans. The judge heard opening statements from Trump's defense and prosecutors who argued over the legality of Trump inflating property values in order to get business loans and insurance policies on better terms.During a break in court proceedings early Monday afternoon, Trump – as he's done in other cases – went after the judge who made the ruling, in this case calling on him to be disbarred.Monday’s trial marks the start of a long legal road ahead for Trump, who also faces a combined 91 charges in four criminal cases and several other civil cases. By Alfredo Pena | Associated PressCIUDAD MADERO, Mexico — The collapse of a church roof during a mass in northern Mexico has killed at least 10 people and injured 60, and searchers said Monday that no further people were believed to be trapped in the wreckage.State police had initially estimated about 100 people were inside the church in the Gulf coast city of Ciudad Madero when it collapsed during a baptism Sunday, and said that approximately 30 parishioners may have been trapped in the rubble when the roof caved in.But Tamaulipas state Gov. Américo Villarreal later said only 70 may have been inside. Villarreal said that, after sending search dogs and thermal imaging cameras under the collapsed concrete slab, it appeared that nobody was still trapped, apart from the ten bodies already recovered.“The most likely thing, I can’t affirm it 100%, is that there aren’t any more people trapped,” Villarreal said. Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Sunday night appointment of Laphonza Butler to fill the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s U.S. Senate seat potentially upends what has largely been a three-way contest that began early this year among three of the state’s Democratic congressional representatives. The selection also came with no preconditions that Butler not seek to keep the job when voters go to the polls next year to choose a senator to serve the Golden State for a full-term starting in January 2025. It wasn’t immediately clear Monday whether Butler, president since 2021 of EMILY’s List, a Washington, D.C., political organization that supports Democratic women candidates who favor abortion rights, would run to hold on to the appointed seat. She did not respond to a request for comment. In a statement on social media Monday, Butler said “I’m honored to accept Gov. Gavin Newsom’s nomination to be U.S. Senator for a state I have made my home and honored by h...
